If you're investing in your very first ATV, you probably have visions of hitting the trail right away. Unfortunately, if you don't take a few minutes to go through some core safety steps, you may find yourself with an unexpected problem while you're out there. To ensure that your first trip out is a successful one, here are a few things you should do when you take delivery of that new ATV.
Make Sure The Fluids Are Full
Insufficient oil or coolant can damage the engine of the ATV. While many dealers will top these things off before shipping a new rig, that isn't always the case. Make sure that you check all of the fluids, including the differential fluid, before you take it out. This should actually be part of your pre-ride routine every time.
Adjust the Shifter
The foot shifter is usually set to a standard height from the factory. While this position may be comfortable for you, there's a good chance that it isn't. You'll want the shifter to be comfortable when you have your riding boots on, so test it out and make sure your foot has room to move around the shifter without getting stuck anywhere. Adjust the lever as needed for comfort.
Set the Clutch
You don't want to have to let go of the handlebars entirely to engage the clutch, so take some time to adjust the clutch wheel. Move the wheel forward or backward as you pull on the lever until the clutch starts engaging where you want it to, then release the lever and leave the wheel where it is.
Check the Wheels and Tires
The lug nuts on ATV wheels should be torqued properly when it leaves the factory, but aluminum wheels can often allow lug nuts to wiggle loose. Since loose wheels can affect handling, safety and ride quality, this is important to remember. Check them not only before your first ride, but before every ride.
While you're at it, check the tire pressure. Riding with underinflated tires can pose a risk to your rims and the bead around the tire. If it's overinflated, you may find that your traction suffers and the ride is bouncy. Instead, make sure your tire pressure is consistent and within the ideal range specified by the ATV manufacturer.
You want your ATV experience to be a positive one, and following these steps will help ensure that. For more information, contact ATV's by Decker Motors Ltd or a similar company.
